This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are “prewriting patterns”, with the average (not prescribed) age at which children are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as “visual motor integration”. ⠀ ⠀ Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. ⠀ ⠀ It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. ⠀ ⠀ So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better.⠀ Source: Beery Buktenica Test of Visual Motor Integration, 6th Edition ⠀ ⠀ #visualmotorintegration #vmi #letterformations #prewriting #writing #kindy #schoolreadiness #earlierisnotbetter #toomuchtoosoon #letthembelittle #letthemplay #prewritingskills #foundationskills #phonics #phonologicalawareness #earlyliteracyskills #literacy #earlyreaders #reading #occupationaltherapy #paediatrics #paediatricot #kidsofperth #perthkids #schoolbasedtherapy #teacher #teachersofinstagram #australiancurriculum #schoolholidays #knowledgeispower

“But I don’t want my child to be spoiled! He cannot get everything he wants instantly!” Yes, of course we do not want our kids to feel entitled, they have to learn delayed gratification. But do you know that waiting requires thinking and planning, and these executive functioning skills are still developing in our kids’ brains? Instead of dismissing your child’s needs, try to first acknowledge their feelings (yes to feelings, no to behaviors!!) so that they become more receptive to your advice. Do the teaching only when they are ready #connectionbeforecorrection Here are some tips to teach delayed gratification: 1️⃣ Role model, calm down and be patient yourself. (You cannot expect your kids to respond immediately, if you always make them wait for you to reply your emails before you attend to them.) 2️⃣ Set empathetic limits “You want to play with the toy so much and it’s difficult to wait. We take turns and you can have it after 5 minutes.” 2️⃣ Suggest activities that they can do while waiting, like counting down from 20, read a book, do some colouring, use a visual timer etc. 4️⃣ Congratulate them when they waited patiently “You counted to 10 while waiting for me. I am done with the laundry, let’s go play now!” It’s a long process to teach delayed gratification, but if you intentionally turn those tricky behaviours into teachable opportunities, your children will get into the habit of waiting, and that helps them to be adaptable and cope with unavoidable delays.💪🏻 Bookmark these tips so you can refer back to them again! #olpn_parenting

Important things to remember when you are married or in a serious relationship: Don’t ever assume your partner feels loved. Date nights are a must. Doesn’t matter if you go out, or stay in. Talking openly about what you want to change in your relationship is important. Learn each others love language. We all don’t perceive love the same way. Go to bed mad sometimes. Don’t force a resolution. Sleeping on it does help. When you get into a fight, don’t just say “I’m sorry”. Say what you are sorry for, and how you will react differently next time. It will get boring sometimes. Every couple goes through the “boring” stage. It’s normal. It will fade. This is the time in your relationship you will have to put the most effort in. Some days you will have to pull more weight than your partner, and vice versa. It’s important to check in on each other’s mental health. It’s okay to go to couples counselling. It helps. It doesn’t mean you two are ending, or failing. Talk about money. Talk about your financial goals. Let your partner know what you expect from them, and vice versa. Turn off the phones an hour before bedtime and just talk to each other. Ask questions like “What do you need to see more of from me?” “How can we understand each other better?” And most importantly, be kind to each other. Love each other. Fight for each other. Remember, love is never easy, and it’s one hell of a ride. But damn, is it ever beautiful, and worth it.
